Edison + Ford Winter Estates

Did you know Thomas Edison and Henry Ford had a winter estate in Fort Myers, FL? They were good friends and shared a piece of land, set with two houses, as their winter escape. You can read all about it on the website here. My mom and I checked it out last weekend. It was a perfect day, weather wise. We spent almost 3 hours there. *Side note: military + family receive 50% off entrance fee…you just have to show them your ID! Your ticket includes a personal audio tour which was very informative.

For any of you fellow plant nerds, there is an extensive collection of trees, shrubs and orchids all over the property. Most everything is labeled. Some of the orchids were just gorgeous! There was a small wedding going out by one of the many large banyan trees on the property. The girls had the prettiest deep purple dresses on. Wish I had gotten a picture!

Shawn B - Sarah,

These pictures are great! Did you have a filter or do some PS work on them? They turned out really nice and it makes me want to go visit the estate!

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

I have three words for Vizcaya….love, love, LOVE! I took these photos awhile ago but I love this place so much I am putting them on the blog. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a little piece of Euro-Heaven in Miami. Located on the beautiful bay, it is a 2 minute drive from downtown. An absolute gem within the hustle and bustle of the city. The first time I visited Vizcaya I fell in love. The second I got engaged, I knew I had to get married here. Too bad it’s REALLY expensive to have a wedding here…so I did the next best thing and had our engagement pictures taken here. I have gone back Vizcaya several times….it never gets old. It is a great place to spend an afternoon and sketch or read a book. If you are in Miami on vacation or live here and have out of town guests, Vizcaya is a must on the ‘to-do’ list. Did I mention I love this place!?!?

Weekend Fit For A Princess

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away was a 3 year-old princess named Lily. She and her other princess friends (Kelly, Mehgan, Candi and Sarah) joined her one weekend on a trip to Disney World! This was Lily’s first time. They had all sorts of fun! They met Lily’s favorite character, Rapunzel, along with many of her friends. They went on lots of rides, ate ice cream, did some dancing and even watched a parade. Princess Lily participated in a Kids Run and got a medal. Lily’s friends were a little crazy though. They decided to run 13.1 miles for fun that weekend as participants in the Disney Princess Half Marathon with 19,000+ other women. Everyone jumped for joy as they ran across the finish line! Exhausted, with their shiny metals in hand, they all drove back to Miami and lived happily ever after.

The Florida Keys

A few months ago I was able to spend a few fun days in Islamorada and Key West with some friends. This is going to sound really sad but I have lived in south Florida now for, mmm, 6 years and this was the first time I had been out on the ocean here (not counting a cruise). I’m not kidding. I have been to the beach and swimming in the ocean plenty of times, but not actually in a boat out in the middle of it. It was so much fun and such a different experience! I am afraid of fish and I certainly don’t eat them. I am that girl who you see running past the seafood section in the grocery store because it stinks and I don’t even want to look at it.  So being out in the middle of the water in a small boat made me a bit nervous at first. My friends kept catching baby sharks on their lines, they were everywhere! In the back of my mind I was waiting for the Jaws movie theme music to start playing. But I did something that I thought I would never do…..I touched one! Sounds pathetic, I know. But this was a huge step for me. As a kid, my friend, Beth, and I would sit at the end of her dock along the lake I grew up on and go fishing. It was fun, except I wouldn’t touch the fish we would catch. Thank goodness she didn’t mind taking it off the end of the line and throwing it back for me. Gives me the heebee-geebees thinking about having to touch those fish.

When I took these photos I had just gotten my camera less than two month prior and was still trying to figure out all the news buttons on the complex camera body.  And I don’t know what I was thinking but I took it out onto a sandbar we parked the boat at. Thank goodness it didn’t fall in the ocean…..

Hillary - Oh my gosh Sarah! I LOVE all these photos. You are so artistic and definitely have an eye for good photos and composition. I wish I would have known you when you were down here! It would have been AWESOME to go around taking pictures! Please come back soon and stay with me for a few days so we can go have some fun!

A Day With Mom

My parents have been wintering the past couple of years in Ft. Myers, FL.  One day, while visiting them recently, my mom and I set out on a full day of exploration. We drove over to Sanibel Island and Captiva Island. We drove from one end of the island to the other, finding all sorts of fun things to take pictures of along the way. I do regret not taking a picture of the yummy, mom+pop ice cream shop we stopped at for an afternoon treat and some of the cutest kids eating their dripping dessert.

I wished I used a film camera sometimes. For the reason that it is more expensive to shoot with than digital and it would help with the self control. Man, I took about a million pictures of birds. Birds! Really unnecessary. But really fun. I am on a fixed lens and I could not believe how close they were letting me get. I just kept shooting away! That wasn’t the bad part, the bad part is going through all those pictures of birds when I got back to the computer. No fun, no bueno. As I was going through and deciding which pictures I wanted to post, I realized there were a lot….again. (Another reason why going back to film might be a good choice at times) Thanks to my mom for a fun day and being so patient while I took 80 ba-gillion pictures that day!

Lara Rios - You are doing such a great job Sarah, I’m so proud of you 🙂
